The Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance course requires students to complete work without direct teacher instruction. This course is self-directed, and students complete the work during the designated time frame. The student must be self-motivated and able to complete the requirements without a teacher to direct and assist with studies. Students will be provided a facilitator, who will monitor student progress. The facilitator is not available to explain the material.

The course features interactive modules and exit tickets. The material for this course is provided by Virtual Virginia and can be accessed in FCPS Schoology. Students will read through 14 modules, complete 140 exit tickets, 14 module tests, and a final exam. This course is only available with the grade option of pass/fail. A suggested schedule will be provided. An opportunity to take the Financial Literacy (W!SE) certification exam at a FCPS school site will be provided. This course is recommended for FCPS students in grades 9-12 during the 2023-24 school year. Current FCPS students who will be in grade 9 in 2024-25 may also enroll but must discuss and receive approval from their school counselor and parent and/or guardian. Students who are not enrolled in FCPS are not eligible to take this course. Only current FCPS students during the 2023-24SY and continuing into the 2024-25SY are eligible to take the course over the summer

Students may take both Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance and a course through Online Campus during the summer. Please note Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance is the only course eligible for co-enrollment with an Online Campus course during the summer. The Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance course is not part of the FCPS Online Campus courses.

All communication for this course will be via email, students must provide valid email addresses for themselves and a parent and/or guardian. Students must have a working computer, access to the internet and Schoology site. FCPS cannot guarantee that users will be able to access Schoology outside the US/US Territories. FCPS does not provide technical support for any devices outside of the US/US Territories.

The Summer Session of the Self-directed Economics and Personal Finance course begins on Friday, June 14 and ends on Friday, July 26. Students will receive an email in their @fcpsschools.net email account from their assigned facilitator prior to the start of the course. This course is available to current FCPS students only.
